Unlimited Domains

December 28th, 2007 1 Comment

During my stumbles across the web for an inexpensive host for unlimited domains, I have decided to look at three more closely. Strangely, they all have the word ‘host’ in their names. Each offer unlimited domains, tons of storage space, and lots of goodies for less than a buck a month. Currently, blowitoutyourpiehole.com is hosted at racknebula.com for a whopping 99¢ per month for 100MB. 100MB is enough space for a Wordpress installation and a couple of other applications. Paying yearly, I get two months free. Translating that into the unlimited host world, I would have to find 600MB for $5.94 a month for six hosts to “break even,” or 800MB for $7.93 a month for eight months. Any extra value is a winner.

A couple of things that I’m not looking at here, but they’re pretty moot anyway. All the domains that I host will either be mine, or as a favor to someone. Email accounts will be handled by google apps for domains, so I don’t care how many email accounts the host has. I don’t need any newsletter lists, because between Yahoo!Groups and phplist, hosted newsletters are moot, as long as you have crontab access. I’m only looking at Linux hosting, because, well, let’s face it, Windows hosting sucks.

So let’s take a look at three unlimited domain Linux hosts, my current host, and a free webhost and compare them side by side. This information is taken off their webpages and is believed accurate as of 12/28/07. Read the rest of this entry »

Year End Lists

December 23rd, 2007 No Comments

At the end of every year, the hordes of people who know things better than you do come out with their top ten lists. Here at The Hole, the best thing that we can come up with is a list of the most popular posts since I installed the Popularity Contest plugin in October. This rates each post on various criteria, but basically it shows which posts have been seen more than others.

  1. Blog Action Day
  2. Here comes $100 oil, and $3 gasoline?
  3. Google Adds IMAP Support To GMail
  4. Brave New World
  5. The Pied Piper of Oakland
  6. Skylark Apartments
  7. Global Warming is a Crock
  8. Pimpin for Birthday Boy’s School
  9. Halloween
  10. The BlogRush Cut

Next year, we should be able to have a better list, as we have just installed the PostRatings plugin. Go ahead and give those posts a rating. It’s like instant, anonymous feedback, and next year, we’ll have a top ten list of the best rated posts.

A long, long, time ago, in a county, far, far away—actually it was 3 years ago in the next county over—I was researching my genealogy. Well, it wasn’t actually researching more as I was searching on-line for someone who was “close enough” to the person I was searching that I would add it to my files. I wasn’t checking facts, just adding as quickly as I could find. Then, in the month or so before I moved, the computer I was using for my research stopped working.

So I have started fresh. The primary source of my genealogy was Some Descendants of Justus Harris, by Sydney Mike Gardner. I also have a Pease line, and my uncle has an original copy of A genealogical and historical record of the descendants of John Pease, Sen. by David Pease from over 100 years ago. I looked through it for a while, and sent it back to him before I moved. Anyway, with the Harris book, I am going back through it to create a gedcom with all the original sources. I guess I can just make all the sources to be Some Descendants of Justus Harris, by Sydney Mike Gardner, but that would probably be defeating the purpose.

Sydney Mike, if you’re out there, or if you’re someone else with a transcription of the book, please contact me. I would like to have a gedcom of the book, and only the book, completely separate from anything else. I have started fresh, but it’s going to take some time for my current genealogy to make it back to where it was, back in the heyday of not caring if it’s accurate. One thing I look forward to is getting actual sources that say that I am the fifth-cousin of James “Wild Bill” Butler Hickock six-times removed. Maybe it was sixth-cousin five-times removed. That’s why I need to research it again.

Find New Hosting

November 14th, 2007 No Comments

So I’m nearing the end of my hosting subscription with one provider. And now, in the age of cheap, multiple domains, I’m looking to consolidate my hosting. Sure, there are the Free Hosts, which work by putting an ad on your page, but every once in a while you want a grown up host. Of course, there are dangers of having all your sites in one location.

I’m compiling a list, slowly but semi-surely of all the places that I can find that allow you to host multiple domains on their sites. Since most sites that do have different plans, ranging from one to unlimited domains, I’m only going to include their unlimited domain packages on my list. Also important to me is SSH and SSL support. Since I use Google Apps for Domains, I don’t care how many email addresses the host uses, and since it’s just me, I only need one ftp account. I’m not sure why most of the places that I’ve looked at brag about how many ftp accounts the provide, but it seems to be exciting to someone.

So here it is, the beginning of the list. It’s my Google Doc, which claims to be republished every time I make a change. That’s not to say that you will be seeing constant and instantaneous changes, but it’s a start until I decide that it’s too much for a little spread sheet and make it a new page in the Pie Hole Empire.

Holy Cow! I just saw that Google Adds IMAP Support To GMail. We use Google Apps for Domains here at “The Hole,” and now that I have discovered it, I do not see why more people and companies do not take advantage of it. Like all things, it is true that this isn’t the best thing for all people and companies, but taking 4 gigs of email off your home computer and putting it on Google’s redundant servers for the price of nothing sounds like a no brainer.

I am using this for most of my domains, although they wouldn’t let me sign up for my NaNoWriMo domain. I’m not sure why. I picked Pen Is Mightier.Info and they wouldn’t let me use Google Apps for Domains. Strangely enough they let me use the domain for a Blogger redirect.

The Pie Hole recommends Google Apps for Domains.

Alexa Error

September 24th, 2007 No Comments

So I previously wrote about boosting my Alexa Rating. Guess what. Caused problems to go into the wordpress control panel and change my blog’s URL to the Alexa Redirect page. The search function doesn’t work. We need to have the search function working, especially if people are going to be searching for the Viral Tags page.

For some reason, the search function that came with the template doesn’t seem to be working the way that I think it should be, so it’s not working anyway, but still. We’re going to be trying out some different templates around here, so watch as things get a little crazy.

The Google search function is working correctly now. I did see a plugin that bounces non-robot links through Alexa, but forgot where I found it. Anyway, I need to increase the page ranking, so I can have a higher ranking than the butt plug barn.

Boost My Alexa Ranking

September 23rd, 2007 2 Comments

As I write this, my Alexa ranking is 4,426,952, according to the Alexa tool bar. I tried to sign up for a reviewing site, where we review a site and get a couple of dollars for it. Our Alexa rank isn’t high enough for them. I found Dosh Dosh’s 20 quick ways to increase your Alexa rank. We’re going to increase our Alexa ranking, one way or another. I have installed the Alexa toolbar so I can check it each and every minute of my life. I’m not sure it will be quite an obsession, but it will be interesting to watch it grow. Hopefully.

I’ve also changed the site around a little. Previously, I had a square ad on the first three posts on the main page and “In the News” on the third one down. I’m sure you all noticed that. On a single post page, the ad was there and the “In The News” block was there for some reason. Anyway, I have taken the ads off of the posts on the front page, and now feature the Adsense Injector on non-front page postings. I also removed the Amazon context ads and the other ad network. I figure that since each ad network has a minimum payout, and I’ve been waiting 3 years since my last adsense payout of about $20, I figure I’d better keep up on the adsense network and finally get a payout.

I also went into the wordpress control panel and changed my blog url to http://redirect.alexa.com/redirect?blowitoutyourpiehole.com
so that every link goes through the alexa network. I have that link on my Viral Tags page, so hopefully it will get linked through from the Viral Tag Network, and from anyone stumbling here will click on one internal link and help boost the rank.

As we try some other things, we’ll report here how things progress. We also have the Alexa widget installed, but it’s showing a page ranking of 4,422,055 as of this writing. Strange. The Alexa page for Blow It Out Your Pie Hole also shows a very old picture, even though I have requested the robot to update the screen shot months ago. Strange.

Anyway, stay tuned as I try things, tweak things, and see what confusions or clarifications I can find.

ViralTags

June 8th, 2007 14 Comments

The updated viralink is the ViralTag. A brilliant idea in its simplicity, but flawed in its simplicity. Andy Coates discusses the hows and whys of from whence it came. At the time of this writing, our Technorati authority has already bounced up to 3. I have also changed the page layout, and have signed up with a new server, which (at the time of this writing) isn’t all setup and working.

I also took a look at the adsense TOS, and they just seem too restrictive for this host. At press time, this blog is on a GoDaddy server, and they run adsense ads. According to Adsense TOS, since they run adsense, I can’t. Without special permission. Also, text linked content ads are less obtrusive to viewers, and google restricts them if you have adsense. Eh, four years, and I still have less than $30. Six more years, and I might get a check. In the mean time, Google counts that money as “money in reserve” or some GAAP term, and that counts as money on hand, helping to thwart a takeover.

So here we go with the next step in making a couple of extra bucks with this blogging mechanism. Just enough to cover the costs of server and domain name, is that too much to ask? Right now, probably.

So looking at the rules of the ViralTag, I already have a problem. “Blow It Out Your Pie Hole” is six words, which is more than the maximum of three. “Blow Your Hole”? “Blow Your Pie?” Hmm. I think we’ll just go with “Pie Hole.” Sounds good enough. So, without further ado, we publish our version of the ViralTag.

Instructions:

1.) Copy and paste the matrix of “ViralTags” below courtesy of Founders Cafe (to support Jimmy’s quest of launching his own Internet Startup with a shoestring budget, please consider subscribing to his Full RSS Feed to see his triumps and struggles in real time).

2.) Substitute the Host Tag and one of the “Viral Tags” in the matrix with your anchor text of choice with your blog’s URL. Please keep anchor text to a max of 3 words to keep the matrix size manageable.

3.) When you get a ping back from someone that has your link in one of their “Viral Tags”, practice good karma by copying his/her Host Tag’s anchor text (automatically the associated link will also be copied) and paste it over one of your “Viral Tags” below.

4.) Encourage and invite your readers to do the same and soon this can grow virally.

Important: Once I get a ping back from you (I promise to do the best I can), I will add your anchor text and the associated link you designate as “Host Tag” here, replacing one of the “ViralTags” from the matrix above. As more and more bloggers copy and paste this matrix, the more backlinks you will have with your anchor text. If everybody who copy and paste from your blog does the same, pretty soon this will spread and go viral. So, the sooner you participate, the more links with anchor text you will receive.
