Next June, California will hold primary elections for Governor, 53 Members of Congress, and for Barbara Boxer’s Senate Seat and other state offices. Just to throw some mix into the process, California also has a process for placing propositions on the ballot. Propositions come in two forms: Initiatives and Referendums.
The Initiative is the power of the People to directly propose and enact state laws and amendments to the California Constitution. Under the initiative process, a proposed statute or constitutional amendment must receive a specified number of valid petition signatures in order to be placed on a statewide ballot for consideration by voters. An initiative measure may not address more than one subject. (Cal. Const. Art. II, § 8(d) and 12).
The Referendum is the power of the People to approve or reject statutes or parts of statutes enacted by the Legislature. However, the Referendum does not apply to urgency statutes which take effect immediately, statutes calling for elections, and statutes providing for tax levies or appropriations for usual and current expenses of the State. To qualify for the statewide ballot, a Referendum measure must be submitted by specified deadlines after the enactment date of the statute. (Cal. Const. Art. II, § [...]

Last fall, California voters approved, by a 52 to 47% “mandate,” Proposition 8, which was essentially the same as 2000′s Proposition 22, which was approved by the voters with a 61% victory, and then thrown out by the courts.
The text of the proposition is very simple. In addition to keeping Marriage legally defined like the dictionary, it prevents future perversions of the word by keeping three people from getting married, or a man marrying a dog, or a woman marrying a horse, or whatever someone else comes up with next.
SECTION I. Title
This measure shall be known and may be cited as the “California Marriage Protection Act.”
SECTION 2. Article I. Section 7.5 is added to the California Constitution. to read:
Sec. 7.5. Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.
As you will recall, Obama was in opposition of Prop 8. I think we now know why.

Yesterday I allegedly completed another revolution around the sun. Whoopie. Honestly, the sun really completed another revolution around me.
Past birthdays have always sucked. When you’re a kid, it’s your birthday, you go to town for the day jumping around like a little shit who’s had too much coffee with sugar, then go to Chuck E. Cheese, have a bite of pizza, jump on the bouncie things, and skip your nap and create terror throughout the household.
When you’re an adult, it’s just another day. Except for a couple of years ago, when I was a temporary employee contracted to the Contra Costa County department of Child Protective Services. I turned in my time card to the actual employer on the day after my birthday, and they said that my services were no longer required at the county. Sure, they’d find me a new position. I’m still waiting. Nick, if you’re still there, and you ever read this, make sure you send a “hello” to Cucumber Jones.
Two years ago, we had an expired cat on my birthday. “Happy Birthday, Daddy. What happened to kitty?”
So historically, my birthdays have sucked ass. But last night, I received an important announcement. Announcing the first [...]
