New Year’s Day, the Anti-Holiday
Tweet
So it used to be, many years ago when I was just a small boy, that New Year’s Day was a day off for everyone except the service industry. You could still go shopping, to restaurants, maybe even drop the car off for repairs. Shops would close early, in celebration of the holiday, and a good time would be had by all.
Now, it’s the anti-holiday. There’s really nothing special at all about the first day of the year. Whoopie, it’s just like the first day of the second month of the year. Whoopie! I tried to get my hairs cut yesterday, and the hair cutter was closed. Then, to top it off, I was starving, and the fast food place next door was closed.
What’s the deal with all the closures? In fact, if you really think about it, instead of closing early, stores and other establishments should stay open to regular hours, but open early, since most people will be sleeping in, some much later than others.
But for now, in the words of Billy Ray Valentine, Merry New Year!
