Health Care “Reform” by the Free Market

Posted by Pie Hole on August 18, 2009 in Pie Hole |

The CEO’s and Boards of Directors of companies are missing a huge opportunity during the congressional August break. The opportunity they’re missing is taking charge of the debate. If they don’t make changes on their own, they may have changes made to them.Uninsured Americans
The health care industry has a spectacular opportunity to do it for themselves before it gets done to them, and here’s what they need to do. First, take a page from the pharmaceutical companies and their free drugs programs. Give someone who does not otherwise qualify for some other program free minimal health care, and advertise it. Shout to the ends of the earth, “We care, we’re helping people.”

Once they’ve scored positive PR points, they will need to work on changing laws. Currently, New York State has such ridiculous insurance mandates that acupuncture coverage is required. The Health Insurance industry needs to get basic coverage laws as uniform and simple as possible. Making simple and minimum coverage will lower costs, making it easier for some of the uninsured Americans who cannot afford health insurance, but want it, to purchase it.

The next phase of health insurace reform will be similar to the assigned risk category of . Although assigned risk is a mandatory part of an optional program—nobody forces you to own or drive an automobile—it can be used as a model for the health insurance companies to provide insurance to those who truly cannot afford insurance, and do not qualify for federal or state assistance programs. People in the program might have to pay more to the system for lower co-pays, or pay more to the system, which includes a portion of pre-paid co-pays.

No matter how the health care industries make change, it is far better to do it to yourself than to have them do it to you. Of course, if the health care industry makes it sound like it’s “the masses’” idea, it will sail through. That, my friends is the tricky part, and until that happens, there will be throngs of people yelling “BLOW IT OUT YOUR PIE HOLE!”
