An Open Letter to CalTrans

Dear director Will Kempton:

While it is disappointing that a tanker truck exploded on Interstate 880 in Oakland this morning, and Caltrans will have the highway closed for over 24-hours for repairs, you can turn this into a major happy-button for East Bay drivers.

Everyone who has ever driven that hates it. It’s bumpy, it sucks, and it’s in a state of disarray. Apparently, it’s still earthquake quake, so it’s exactly what Californians need, I guess. A safe piece of crap.

Anyway, since the freeway will be out of operation until at least tomorrow, why don’t you take a couple of extra days, work through the weekend and slap a nice, thick, smooth piece of asphalt on that piece of crap we call the Nimitz.

Start at the destruction with one of those giant asphalt grinders, and right behind have a team of street sweepers and guys with shovels. Right behind that, have the asphalt paving machine. Or, even better, use some of that rubberized asphalt (made from recycled tires) that they’re using over in Contra Costa County. Start grinding now, and don’t stop until early Monday morning.

Get the word out now, and you will get bonus points from commuters. They already know that tomorrow’s commute is going to be screwed, so they’re making plans now. Just add an extra day to it so the reward for drivers will be a nice, smooth freeway.

If you can’t manage to do that,

BLOW IT OUT YOUR PIE HOLE!
