Earthquake

October 31st, 2007 No Comments

Last night, we had a little earthquake. Seemed like a pretty good one, from where we were, less than 17 miles northwest of the “hypothetical epicenter.” Nice, rolling action. Shook the pictures, but didn’t knock anything down.

But then, there was the five-year old. His first earthquake, and it was a goodie. He was a bit afraid, didn’t want us to leave him alone in the bathtub, or alone in his bedroom. Poor little guy. This morning, he was over it.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — With oil prices setting records over $90 a barrel and $100 looking ever more likely, experts say there’s a good chance drivers will see $3 gasoline before the end of the year.

“Three dollar gasoline in this market is unavoidable,” said Stephen Schork, publisher of the industry newsletter the Schork Report. “At this rate, we’re going to see $4 a gallon.”

These remarkable works of wisdom come from CNN Money’s
Here comes $100 oil, and $3 gasoline. Where the hell has this pie hole been looking at gasoline prices, Trenton, NJ? Gas Buddy show this to be the least expensive gas in the nation right now. Back when I was trying out the hypermiling techniques, Charleston, SC was usually the cheapest, but it’s seemed to have slipped in the ratings a bit.

And why am I not hypermiling anymore? Well, if you remember from a while back, I had started the hypermiling techniques. Slower driving, drafting behind trucks, stopping the engine before hitting a stop sign or light, all the easiest hypermiling techniques. That all ended when I got the call from Gary. Holy Cow! I just saw that Google Adds IMAP Support To GMail. We use Google Apps for Domains here at “The Hole,” and now that I have discovered it, I do not see why more people and companies do not take advantage of it. Like all things, it is true that this isn’t the best thing for all people and companies, but taking 4 gigs of email off your home computer and putting it on Google’s redundant servers for the price of nothing sounds like a no brainer.

I am using this for most of my domains, although they wouldn’t let me sign up for my NaNoWriMo domain. I’m not sure why. I picked Pen Is Mightier.Info and they wouldn’t let me use Google Apps for Domains. Strangely enough they let me use the domain for a Blogger redirect.

The Pie Hole recommends Google Apps for Domains.

The BlogRush Cut

October 22nd, 2007 No Comments

BlogRush is in Phase 2, after introduction and taking everyone who applied. Now, they are cleaning up the spam blogs, non English blogs, and low quality blogs. They report cutting over 10,000 blogs from their network. I’m glad to see some networks cleaning up crap. In surfing between MyBlogLog network accounts, I see some sites that are in the beginning phases, non English, and “poor quality.” Most notably are the sites in the network that do not have the widget.

The scariest thing about BlogRush is that Blog It Out Your Pie Hole is still a network member. Maybe it’s the best thing.

My son has started school, and it was his birthday yesterday. We’re having a party today for that big “05.” So anyway, he came home with a pledge form the other day for the school. With all the tax-payer dollars that are going to the schools, apparently they don’t have enough money for music, cheer and other programs. So the school has asked for donations, and I’m putting it out for the world. All profits from the ads on this site and all donations between now and October 26, 2007 will go to the school. The school needs all donation money on the 26th, so that’s why that date for cut off.

In the spirit of donation for school, all donations through this posting will go to the school regardless of when they come in. So if you are able to, and wish to, please donate to the school.

Boosted Alexa Ranking

October 19th, 2007 No Comments

So I just checked my Alexa ranking. I had a little boost, up from 4,426,952 to 3,578,624, which is what by badge is now claiming. Right now, the toolbar is boasting an impressive 792,514. That’s up 3.6 Million in just a couple of weeks. I can’t say for certain what any one particular change was, but here is what I did.

I changed the site theme. Made it more aesthetically pleasing. It used to be a gawdawful orange, now, as you can see, it’s more crisp and it just looks better. I think that more people who have never been here could tell, through the universal ether, that the site is beautiful and they should come visit.

Skylark Apartments

October 18th, 2007 No Comments

An Open Letter to Equity Apartments, property owners of Skylark Apartments in Union City:

As you know, since you are one of my loyal 15 or so readers, I have been without a car for about a month, and have been walking to BART. Every Thursday, rain or shine, and we’ve had a bit of rain lately, your sprinklers do a very good job of watering everything except the grass. By the time I get to your sidewalk, a whole tanker truck full of water is in the gutter. The sprinklers, if they can even be called that, are spraying across the sidewalk, drenching the concrete. I’m glad to see such wonderful work in our drought-plagued state.

Please get your maintenance crew out there to fix this because I’m tired of getting wetter than wet, even when it’s not raining. I know rents are high, but probably half of that goes to your water. In other words, fix your sprinklers and BLOW IT OUT YOUR PIE HOLE!

The Pied Piper of Hamelin, as you remember, was a story about rats. The City of Brunswick was so overrun with rats, that they fought the dogs and killed the cats and bit the babies and ate the cheese, drank the soup and in general, caused a major ruckus.

So the townsfolk called the Pied Piper in to get rid of the rats. All the rats flocked to him with his nifty little tune on his nifty little pipe. He played his pipe and the rats came running. They didn’t pay him, so he came back, played his pipe and the children came running. They paid him, and he brought the children back and everyone was happy.

Now that story happened “Almost five hundred years ago,” but the story was written a couple hundred years ago, so we think that this is the story of fantasy and make believe. But today, we still have the Pied Piper. Although his spell isn’t too strong. Instead of a pipe, he has a horn. Instead of walking, he drives.

The Pied Piper of Oakland drives around, honks his horn, and people come running out of buildings to see him. They talk to him and the rest of the people out there, and the spell wears off and people go back inside. Here, for your enjoyment, is the first known photo of the Pied Piper of Oakland.

Blog Action Day

October 15th, 2007 1 Comment

Today, bloggers are enacting en mas to try to make a difference with Blog Action Day by righting about the environment. I, for one, will not participate in this joyous event celebrating Captain Planet and his drug-running son.

“Some people are able to get 100 miles per gallon in a Prius. My son can get 100 miles per hour. And that’s after inventing the Internet.”

It has also been commented, by “Anonymous” that the “blog action day” will have as much effect as the e-petitions. I’m thinking that in the future, there will be a big blog shakeup. Not unlike the “dot com bust” of so many years ago. After that time, the blogosphere will be a more respected environment. Sure, we have the independent news coming out via blog, but it’s ignored by the majority of people. Hell, even this blog is ignored by the majority of people in my house.

So again, I will not participate in Blog Action Day. However, I am going to post about it in a futile attempt to increase traffic.
